Materials

Over the 17 years of teaching I have used a variety of materials from proprietary materials of Berlitz and Nova as well as “off the shelf” third party texts such as New Headway, International Business, New Total English, to name a few.

Read Write Inc. Phonics

Currently, the majority of my students are taking phonics classes and the materials I use is Oxford University Press’ “Read Write Inc.”. Designed for children from the age of 4 to about 9, RWI Phonics is an program that gradually introduces the 44 sounds in English and integrates practices through reading and writing exercises.  This program has been widely adopted by many schools in the UK.

Starters, Movers and Flyers

Cambridge University Press’ Fun for Starters, Movers and Flyers helps to prepare kids for the YLE Starters, Movers and Flyers exams, which are the first 3 Cambridge English qualifications for kids.  The qualifications are aligned with the CEFR for languages.  The Common European Framework of Reference is an internationally recognized standard for describing language ability.  The CEFR is a 6-point scale starting from A1, beginner level to, C2, for those who have mastered the language.  Young Learners English are the following levels of the CEFR:

YLE Starters
YLE Movers
YLE Flyers

Pre- A1 Starters
A1 Movers
A2 Flyer

Other Materials

Besides “Read Write Inc. Phonics” and “Fun for…” I also use “Kid’s Box” by Cambridge University Press for more general English. This is a series of 7 levels which covers the CEFR levels Pre-A1 to A2. Depending on what you would like your child to focus on, I have other materials available, or I will try to source something suitable.
